When selecting the type of finish you want on your new faucet, one question worthy of consideration is whether or not the faucet finish you select will affect the performance of your faucet. The answer, from the plumber’s perspective is that the finish you choose is all about look. And whether you choose a brass, chrome or stainless steel faucet, it is the inner mechanism of the faucet that determines its functional ability, and not the outer look. It is important to mention, however, that you shouldn’t assume that because your are paying a lot of money for a faucet with a great finish, that it will automatically be long lasting and durable. Once again, the performance of the faucet depends on the mechanism inside and not on the wrapper. A bad mechanism in a beautiful wrapper will not work any better than a bad mechanism in a bad wrapper. So while shopping for the faucet that has the look you want, don’t forget to check which type of faucet mechanism it has. Most modern faucets use a washerless mechanism. And most of the trendy faucets have a cartridge or disc faucet mechanism. However, you might want to check with your plumber to get his opinion.
Aside from the pure look of the faucet and its compatibility with your kitchen décor, you should consider, the durability of the faucet finish, and how its appearance will or will not change in time. Here a few tips:
1) Brass requires frequent polishing, and unprotected brass will tarnish (develop brown spots), in time. Two coating processes are used to protect brass. The first is super coating with epoxy, which is being replaced more and more by PVD, (physical vapor deposition).
2) Brass faucets coated with nickel has fallen out of favor because the nickel rubs off easily exposing the brass.
3) Chrome plated brass is a popular finish today, however, it does require frequent polishing to maintain its shine.
4) Stainless steel is a popular finish. It might take on a slight bronze hue in time.
Other factors related to your selection of faucet finish are related to the appearance, your kitchen décor and your personal preference, so Good shopping!
