His jaw had been hurting for as long as he could remember. His teeth would clench and grind in the day and night and it was getting worse. His dentist told him he needed night guards for TMJ. The cost was enough to turn him off, he was told it would take about six weeks to see results. But the constant pain was enough to drive him take a chance.

A few weeks later he wished he hadn’t…

The TMJ night guard wasn’t working at all. His jaw would still hurt even when the guard was in his mouth at night. He would still clench and grind his teeth during the day. He noticed that he was slowly but surely grinding through the mouth guard with his teeth.

With approximately 30% of the population diagnosed with symptoms of TMJ at some point in their life, stories like these are quite common. Unfortunately the condition is quite difficult to treat, because there was thought to be no clear cut way to cure it. Most of the time it’s caused by stress or as a result of bad accidents.

But many teeth grinders and TMJ sufferers have been finding relief in home exercises that have been specially developed by therapists. The exercises work by relaxing and massaging the muscles and tendons that are causing misalignment of the jaw, which is what TMJ is. By doing this the jaw is usually able to return back to it’s normal position.

But this can take some time, people looking for a quick fix might be disappointed. Muscles have to be retrained, the exercises do this, but it can take about 2 – 3 weeks or more to be completely effective. Some people report massive pain relief in the first few days of doing exercises, but these are the lucky ones!

How Do You Do Them?

The exercises are quite simple and can be done in about 10 – 15 minutes. They involve things like opening your mouth in certain ways, practicing different jaw movements, massaging certain places in your neck, mouth and jaw that relieve pain quickly and stretching muscles all over your body that relieve pressure on your jaw.

You can stop wasting your time trying to find TMJ night guards and start using the exercises below to improve your TMJ.

Something else that has been proven to alleviate TMJ pain is reducing your stress levels, since stress is a big cause of TMJ.

When you find that the person closest to you is snapping more often, it is time to get them some stress relief. You could offer it to them in form of their favorite hobby, or you could just offer to take a walk to defuse the situation. I know you won’t be surprised at the results.

“My young son asked me what happens after we die. I told him we get buried under a bunch of dirt and worms eat our bodies. I guess I should have told him the truth - that most of us go to Hell and burn eternally - but I didn't want to upset him.”
